Two letters of the alphabet. In English it means to move or proceed.  In Japanese GO is the number five.  Both meanings of GO are being embraced by Sakura Foundation as we mark our fifth anniversary as a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and celebrating Japanese and Japanese American (JA) heritage, culture and community as well as sustaining the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple.

Sakura Foundation’s first event was presented in March 2016.  “Tohoku Today – A Celebration of Japan’s Food, Culture and Recovery After 3.11.201” was a fundraising event to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the devasting tsunami and earthquake in the Tohoku region of Japan.  This event brought together 15 Japanese and JA organizations and companies as sponsors to host nearly 200 guests and raise $7,500 in support of the ongoing recovery efforts.  The partnerships that took place with this event are long-lasting and continue to enhance the local JA community.  There are currently 21 MGLP alumnae who are making their mark on the JA community.

To date, the Foundation has distributed more than $7,000 in community grants and $37,500 to graduating high school seniors who have supported the JA community.  Sponsorships, donations and support to numerous organizations which share our mission have taken place over the past five years.  We are grateful for the support, encouragement and collaboration we have received since our inception.

As a means of celebration and thanks, the Foundation will host a Fifth Anniversary Celebration on September 12th at Space Annex.  Your $38 ticket will include an amazing 11-piece dinner masterfully created by Tokio chef/owner Miki Hashimoto and two free drink tickets.  Special entertainment will be provided by One World Taiko in a collaborative performance bridging the dynamic rhythms and movement of Japanese taiko drumming with modern-day hip-hop and break dancing with bboys Akatsuki.  We also have a few surprises in store!  Socialize at Space ANNEX gallery with friends, old and new, and soak in the festivities as we look back on our achievements and look forward to our continued support of the JA community into the future!
